This festival celebrating the birth of hula on Moloka’i was started by late Kumu Hula John Kaimikaua, founder of Halau Hula o Kukunaokala, to educate and enlighten all people of things Hawaiian through ancient Hawaiian chant and dance of Moloka’i. The tradition continues this year with cultural excursion, lecture, and ho’olaule’a all designed to give insight into this year’s theme Lei ’ia Moloka’i i ke aloha lei hulu mamo. Halau Hula o Kukunaokala is a Native Hawaiian cultural dance group founded in 1977 whose mission is to educate and enlighten all people of things Hawaiian through ancient chants and dances of pre-western Moloka’i.
